Budget Self-Defense Buyer's Guide

Or: "I Have No Money and I Must Pew"

This guide is aimed at the cheapest reliable “duty” grade guns to get someone in at the lowest acceptable entry point. It is aimed for self-defense in a concealed carry situation, and self-defense in the home. It’s not going to be pretty, smooth to shoot, or have the bells and whistles, but it will be reliable and shoot when your life depends on it. We are aiming for a one-size fits all mentality as much as possible for someone who doesn’t want to do extra research and wants a shopping list that will not let them down. The prices will be MSRP, so if you hunt deals, other guns CAN be cheaper (especially Law Enforcement LE used), but in the interest of keeping this as “up-to-date” as possible, we will only look at MSRP.

Conceal Carry

Guns

Ruger RXM will be our recommendation for the most bang for your bucket concealable handgun. MSRPing at a flat $400 at Academy:

The RXM is often found at prices around $350 on sale.

  • Has rail for light
  • Has optic mount for red dot

  • Direct mount for: RMR, Delta Point Pro, and RMSc patterns
  • Compact (will fit most people’s hands unless you have tiny hands)

Accessories

For self-defense, there are a few must have accessories for your gun. First, you need a light. Half of the day is in darkness, and you need to be able to accurately assess what you are looking at before you shoot. The other must have accessory is going to be a red dot. A red dot quickens target acquisition, and allows you to focus on the target instead of a front post, achieving more situational awareness. The order of acquisition is debated, my personal opinion is to acquire the light first, but either order of acquisition is acceptable.

Red dot

Red dots decrease the time to get sights on target, and make it easier to maintain situational awareness. There are a lot of “airsoft” red dots out there, so sifting through the bullshit can be a bit difficult. Duty-grade red dots are what we’re looking for. Airsoft red dots will not survive the recoil impulses of a real gun over time.

This is a no-frills, budget red dot.
Pros:

  • Cheap
  • RMSc footprint (which is direct mount compatible)
  • 40k hours of battery life
  • Scratch/fog resistance
  • Low profile for concealment
  • Shake-awake tech (turns off if not moved to save battery)

Cons:

  • Battery mount is below the dot (requires rezeroing when battery is changed)
  • Small glass may be annoying to some

Light

Lights are usually influenced by your gun and what rails it supports as well as holster compatibility. We’ve picked one that is duty made (will survive recoil), and of a compact enough size.

Holster

Holsters are deeply personal, and while we will attempt to make a suggestion here, holsters are one accessory that many people try and buy a lot of in an attempt to find something that fits their bodyshape.

There are a lot of VERY cheap holsters out there, we need something that covers the trigger guard, will hold it’s shape, and support a light. This holster can be carried via a belt or via the enigma system (which is popular with our members and general femme population). It also has compatibility with the light system we recommend.

Sweat guard protects your body from rubbing against the gun. Some people like it, some hate it and wish it were removed. Personal preference. TacWare Canting clips will be more secure than the other 2 free options.

Belt

There are a lot of good EDC belts out there. As long as it’s rigid and solid, it will be good. Kore is a very good EDC belt brand that doesn’t break the bank.

While we are listing a Black Nylon one, any Kore belt will work, and picking something that will match your attire will be more important, such as a leather belt for work.

Ammunition

Ammunition is one of the most important choices to make. Defense ammo is much more expensive than range ammo. Luckily, we don’t need as much of it. It is incredibly unlikely that you will ever need a reload.

This is a box of 50, and testing some rounds will be important on your gun to make sure it likes the ammo.

Home Defense

Guns

We are going with an AR-15 platform. It is the most common and modular platform. We are picking a rifle > shotgun due to ease of use.

This is another option, the prices ping-pong. Either is fine, get the cheapest of these two that you can find.

Red Dot

Like the pistol, we recommend a red dot. At the close ranges home defense occurs at, a red dot is undisputed on target acquisition speed. Red dots have gotten durable and reliable enough that backup sights are no longer considered necessary.

This mounts directly to the rail, and will require no extra parts.

Light

Having a light lets you see what you are pointing at, and blind an opponent. For a good all in one light, we’re recommending the Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount 1 kit $140:

This is a good all in one kit that can mount on your top rail with a remote switch included.

Sling

Often overlooked is a sling. This is a strong recommendation, since using a sling frees up your hands to do things such as check on your kids/pet, etc.

Sling being a less important part of the rifle, is where we can cheap out a bit. Going cheap but usable is the CVLIFE Rifle Sling Two Point $18:

This may not be the most comfortable over time, but in a home defense situation, where you won’t wear it for too long, it’s perfect.

Ammo

There are a ton of various ammo types for 5.56 (aka .223 in most cases), and different scenarios when you utilize different ammo types. But for our case of home defense while reducing overpenetration through walls, we recommend:

Disclaimers: It is not uncommon to get a full rifle for closer to or under $400 during sales. This is the cheapest reliable all-in-one solution. Buying the rifle in parts will likely result in cheaper prices, but require a tiny and easy amount of assembly. See our other detailed posts on putting together a complete lower and complete upper. We suggest having a 15rd magazine instead, but in the interest of keeping as low budget as possible, we left it out due to RF-15 coming with a 10rd already.
